People tend to try new foods when they are on holiday. Local cuisine can introduce you to new ingredients and new ways of cooking. I remember travelling in Spain and seeing roadside sellers making huge pans of paella on cast iron gas rings and when I went to Africa, fish being barbequed ready to eat straight from market stalls. Holidays have a lot of potential for food writers. Take notes the next time you are away and never be afraid to ask a chef or cook what their ingredients are or to ask for their recipe. Some will not want to give away family secrets but if you explain you are a writer and would like to send their recipe for an exquisite meal to a magazine for publication, they may just give you the information you need.
If you really want to follow the route of a food writer, you can also base your next holiday around food. Take a cookery class in Tuscany or learn to make gourmet food in Paris. Open yourself up to cooking experiences in other countries and you will have the basis for many foodie articles.
